“Sitting On A Star”

“Sitting On A Star” is a track from Strawberry Alarm Clock’s 1968 album Wake Up… It’s Tomorrow. Another of the album’s musically adventurous tracks, the song features a harsh, militaristic beat throughout its verses along with spidery, Doors-like choruses and the occasional faux-funky jazz interlude.

The singing is high and plaintive with a subdued harmony chorus mixed low in the background. It must be said that the lyrics are uneventful, describing a state of psychedelic exploration-cum-catatonia. Despite the rat-a-tat musical grip of the band, “Sitting On A Star” has an overall soft feel due to the sweetness of the vocals and their soaring melody.

“Just sitting on a star with clothes of laced velvet
And a clear mind to think”

In spirit, subject matter, and rhetorical approach, “Sitting On A Star” recalls “Sit With The Guru” from elsewhere on the Wake Up… It’s Tomorrow album.
